Happy New Year! Glad to see the site back up. I ran in the heat of the day around down town, which was pretty deserted. Sucking in that increasingly bad air. New treadmill coming to the office but not here yet as of Friday am.

Treadmill at the Grand America in 40 minutes. Kept it easy but decided to go up to 12 momentarily to test and there was no aggravation. So that's certainly good. Air here sucks. Treadmill again tomorrow.

I did 135 treadmill miles in 2014 with the last session on July 21. It has not been missed, but January (inversion) and July (heat) are the months for it.

Josh, this really is a dilemma isn't it.. I have friends who are gay and as such I have empathy especially for those who are members. I can relate to this somewhat in being an alcoholic who has struggled for many years every day to stay sober.. I don't know why, but it's a part of me and who I am and is something I have to overcome. I haven't come to terms yet as to why some people have this and others don't. However, I think the important thing to remember is how would the Savior treat these people and to search his gospel.. Men by nature are not perfect and as such can not make these ultimate judgements. Only Christ can.. But we do the best we can and try to live the higher law" which is "Love thy neighbor as thyself."

Just when you thought TLC couldn't get the bar any lower.

From Josh E on Wed, Jan 07, 2015 at 18:34:43 from 166.137.246.88

Thanks Steve. A few things. I am very sorry about your struggles with alcoholism and I am glad you have some control over it. I don't agree that there is any relation, however, between alcoholism and homosexuality. Being gay is not a problem and it is not something that one can or should try to overcome.

As a legal relationship, marriage is a personal choice of a consenting adult and private motives should not be questioned. I have no problem with these men marrying these women.

TLC has a history of exploiting people for profit; people others will find fascinating and curious. These couples may have an agenda of encouraging gay young men to marry and have families instead of pursuing their natural instincts. The result will only be lives ruined for nothing but a spectacle.

From Josh E on Wed, Jan 07, 2015 at 18:50:05 from 166.137.246.88

I should clarify that whether or not I have a problem with it, it's none of my business. I do have some concerns...

From Fritz on Wed, Jan 07, 2015 at 21:00:37 from 98.202.9.237

I don't think we know if lives are always ruined by not following our natural instincts. Obviously these guys think their lives are better by making that choice. But I agree that encouraging or putting on display people who have made this choice seems exploitative.

From Josh E on Thu, Jan 08, 2015 at 08:45:33 from 205.235.104.4

Re lives ruined - that was my vaguest and likely weakest point. What I intended was that anecdotally it seems that families going on TLC often have drama ensue including the break up of families. And if others decide that somehow this lifestyle is appealing they could ruin some lives.

I think the better point is that TLC does this without concern for this history and these possibilities.

From Fritz on Thu, Jan 08, 2015 at 12:15:07 from 65.116.116.6

Interesting. I wasn't aware of the history of families/people who were on TLC. Let's hope these folks don't suffer the same outcome.

I calculate that the hills slowed us down by an average 16 seconds / mile, so we'd have been 7:12 with that effort otherwise, presuming Mapmyrun was close on it's overall computation of the hills (610 feet). Seems at least close, since the high point was 531' higher than the low point.

From CollinAnderson on Sun, Jan 18, 2015 at 10:02:02 from 216.190.238.162

Also, who's Frtiz? Sounds like a carbonated electrolyte recovery drink.

From Josh E on Sun, Jan 18, 2015 at 10:21:06 from 75.169.25.203

It's the frtizziest.

According to Strava, which I don't agree with just by perceived effort, we ran a 7:22 adjusted pace. It thinks our 7:01 mile down Virginia and over to S Temple for a drop of 299 ft was 8:36 adjusted.

From CollinAnderson on Sun, Jan 18, 2015 at 10:35:36 from 216.190.238.162

It thinks the overall hilliness only slowed us by 6 seconds? That seems a little off. Daniels got even more credibility today. Remember how I said that I thought Brett Hales was worth more like 1:04 flat from my Daniels conversions of his UT downhill halves (both Haunted Halves, within a month of his presumedly aimed qualifying peak)? I got home and happened across his name at 1:04:10 from USA Half Championships. The funny thing is that I bet he was more peaked at Las Vegas when he first went for the qualifier since it was so recent, so my calculation that he could crack 1:04 in the right race was definitely valid.

From Josh E on Sun, Jan 18, 2015 at 11:16:53 from 75.169.25.203

I think it thinks the uphills are hard but the downhills offset most of that.

From Fritz on Sun, Jan 18, 2015 at 11:31:16 from 50.252.142.179

i tend to think the hill overall slowed us by about 15 seconds a mile. Did you see that Jared Ward from BYU took 2nd in the Half Marathon Championships!?! 1:01:42. Wow.

From CollinAnderson on Sun, Jan 18, 2015 at 11:49:50 from 216.190.238.162

If Jared can get under 61 while focusing on the marathon, he can make the team in 2020. Honestly, it could even be possible for 2016. I wouldn't be surprised to see Ritz injured, and Meb will be 40, so anything can happen with him. Does anyone expect Hall to be faster than 2:13 at any point these days? The USA marathon championship didn't have any of the biggest names, but Ward was still 2nd there too. I could see him being top 5 in a slow race.

Finally a real run again. A Marathonina. I went to Matheson State Park and did seven loops. They measure .78 and there is a climb of 50 ft and a descent of 50 ft in each loop. It is on loose gravel and it isn't particularly fast but it's only half a mile from my office and it's away from roads so that's good. I might run on it more. I felt good not great and averaged in the 7:50s for 51 and change overall with perhaps 500 ft of climb. Warm in the 50s.

Took a day off for Charlie's last day of 1st grade. Alone now and ran a nice loop from home to 2nd ave up to 11th via V St and down memory grove. Then cut across to the capitol and home. Felt ok. Can feel the fatigue of three days of running and a small twinge under my left knee almost like a high shin splint. 7:57 pace.

I enjoyed running in some wind and light rain very much. You miss the weather when you aren't running. You just don't experience it the same way when you're not spending a lot of time in it.

Down another pound. Weighing myself at the same time each morning.

At about 10 am, I ran from home up wall around the capitol up bonneville road up city creek and turned around just past the water station. On the way back, I split off on the city creek trail and maintained the 9:20 pace I had been running on the way up. I needed the slower pace to complete my longest run timewise in some time. I felt ok not good on the way down and my legs didn't really slow until mile 11. Ran down memory grove and along n temple through marmalade and finished in 1:52. So 9:20s pretty much the whole way.

I can still feel a minor knee pain on the left side but I am guessing that is nothing. I've never had knee pain and Joel at Tosh said that if haven't had it by now, its' not likely to ever happen.

That's 9 miles on average with 900 feet of climb on average over the past four days. More than I'd done the previous four weeks and I am holding up ok. Trying to decide whether to run tomorrow or skip a day. I think I will go back down to 50 minute runs on the weekdays and up the weekend run a bit each week. Hopefully I will hold together. I've decided that running with some pain will have to be the norm. Better than not running at all. I will also continue to try to fix it in my half assed way.

At 11, I left the office for a Wasatch out and back when my phone said it was still 72 degrees. I decided to continue doing 8 mile runs. I was a little rusty in the first mile but felt better thereafter. This is a hilly run for the first and last quarter but mostly flat for the middle half. 550 ft of ascent total including the lovely 200 ft in the last mile up to my office when the temperature was rising to high 70s. 66 minutes

I took yesterday off and went to Pride then had some family over. A nice and very lazy day and I gave back the gains (and by gains I mean loss) I've had weight wise. I quite enjoyed the Warriors/LeBron game.

11:30 am run from work. High 70s to start low 80s to finish. 11th ave out and back via the U hospital and fed heights. This is descent for the first half and a climb for the second half so it's grueling on the way back. I ran a bit faster today and with the heat it ended up being a good moderate effort. 7:42 pace with 700 ft of ascent.

Knee hurt at first but not after the 2nd mile. That was the hope with some shoes with soles and perhaps that was the necessary tweak...

I kept on thinking I should do five mile runs when I wasn't running. Just five miles five times a week. Why not? But I never did those runs. Somehow, eight miles feels like a better threshold. If I am out there at least an hour, I've had a good workout.

At 12, I did treadmill in the office. 50 minutes with a slight progression. This is a new treadmill but the same model as the old so I don't know yet whether it runs slow. So it goes.

Was going to do a run outside at 930 but I was diverted by a service appointment. Knee is almost 100% so that's good.

Fritz, just putting in a plug for my general physician, Stephen Wood at the Foothill South Clinic. He's sixties'ish, but a runner, a marathoner. I've been seeing him for years (annual physicals) and really like him. Seems to really know what he's talking about when it comes to blood work etc. Anyways, just wanted to pass his name along.

No denying I've had a bad July, but Thursday is my day. I can't let down Thursday. Also, Charlie is at the NHMU for summer camp and has been asking me to run by when they are outside. So outside I went onto the exposed BST behind my office. Low 80s and bluster at around 12:30. I ran by NHMU thrice with no kids outside. At the risk of appearing to lurk, I went on my merry way along the skyline trail around Red Butte Gardens. They are doing some construction in there so I guess preserving the hillside is no longer a thing.

I enjoyed feeling the weakness in my legs and my calves in particular on the steep ascent. The jostling of my blubbery torso was nice on the descent back down to the creek side. My left leg is so much weaker than my right. I almost hobble along with one leg doing all the dirty work and the other just trying not to trip. On the dirt road down Red Butte canyon, I tried to focus on an even quick pace and easy breathing. Often, I start this and then forget about it within seconds. But if I can focus on my stride and my breathing and just be present within the run, it is a serene feeling.

I managed to get in just over 50 minutes and back to work. Thursday night and the long weekend is here.

The race started at 10 and it was warm and strangely humid. My phone said something like 46% humidity later. With two higher mileage weeks (50) and the 90 minute run yesterday, my legs had no pop. It is one of those days when I would have run 8:30-9 minute pace. 19:56 was my time consisting of one faster mile (6:19 with 44 ft down so not that fast) and then a slog in.

Fritz announcing it on Strava put one fast guy in and Albert Wint showed up hoping to win without trying so I was 4th and out of the tin cup podium.

At around 2:30 pm, I ran from my house to the airport and back. I couldn't find the bike road on the way out so I ran on the airport road for a while, which was less than ideal. I evenutally found the path and ran it for a bit before returning. This is my longest run in more than a year and my SI joint was pretty achy. I stopped twice to adjust it and it was still troublesome.

After a quicker mile 9, I slowed down for the last few to below 8 minute pace. 1:47 total moving time. The gusty blustery windy wind took a break for most of the run making the temperature in the low 70s feel pretty good.

City Creek out and back with Adam at 7:30 on a cool Sunday morning - about 50 degrees. Just beat the 9 minute guy.

That's three weeks of 50+ miles straight or more than 20% of my total mileage for the year. I am not feeling worn down but I am not feeling fast either. I think I need to get my weight down to the low 170s and I still have PT work to do if I ever want to run sub 6 again.

Slight achilles pain so I need to watch that. Maybe a down week with two days off.

Easy run from work. I ran at about 12:15 when it was in the low 70s, zigging and zagging across the upper U. The achilles is about the same but hurts worse running downhill so I avoided hills as much as possible. 60 minutes total.

At 10am with temps in the low 60s, I ran from work down to the U track and around the outside 16 times or so. I decided to run the straights slightly faster, then ran most of mile 6 faster. Ended up with miles of 6:59, 6:58, 6:43, 6:23 for those fartleky miles. 61 minutes for the run.

The achilles bothered me on the way down to the track but felt really good on the soft flat. I must avoid downhill.

Sorry I missed you today. I had just enough time to change and meet you at Trax after TAing, but realized as I was about to change that my running shoes were in my trunk. Of course, my car keys weren't in the same building as my running clothes, so I had to sprint to another building barefoot, grab my keys, run back in the wrong direction to my car to get my shoes, and then sprint to Trax. All in all, I actually had to go more than a mile out of my way to get my shoes and get back to Trax, so you were gone when I got there. I ended up running Mt Van Cott, which was OK, but annoyingly steep. I only have 20 min for lunch tomorrow, but I'll do a lunch run Wed, Thurs, and Fri if you're up for it. Hope PT went well.

No problem. I wandered over to the track and was running in the 9s and decided I needed to cut it short. Probably better that way. I should be running every day this week.

At 12:45, I went down to the work out room to do a 60 minute treadmill run while it rained outside. My legs were feeling good so I did a tempo run of sorts as I am inclined to do on the boring treadmill. All flat and no achilles trouble so that should be behind me. While this is a new treadmill, it is the same model as the prior and I suspect it is also a bit slow. It went something like this:

The third mile I continued not to push and got a 6:35 with 78 up and 50 down. After the third mile clicked off, I finally pushed the pace going uphill and ran 5:35 pace to the finish with 33 up. Short cool down and I left before awards. Not sure if I got anything but Fritz will let me know at some point.

Is there an admissions fee for gymnastics?

From Fritz on Sat, Oct 10, 2015 at 17:50:32 from 98.202.9.237

I think there is a fee but they do find many creative ways to give away tickets, hence the incredible average attendance of 14K+. Incredibly they do have about 7,000 season ticket holders.

"Utah Gymnastics has the highest average attendance in women's college sports almost every year, attracting more fans than the powerhouse women's basketball programs at Tennessee and Connecticut, even outdrawing the WNBA."

How are all the ailments holding up?

From Josh E on Thu, Nov 19, 2015 at 10:17:57 from 205.235.104.4

Hey James. Everything is holding up pretty well. This new PT not only has me rehabbing and strengthening, but she did a better job, I believe, of undoing some of the damage that strengthening and rolling alone won't do. She seemed to know how to unlock all the stiffness and get everything back in place so it feels different. Still hard to be consistent with PT though.

Good to see you got that new job. Let me know whenever you want to go out for a run.

Yay for feeling good! Was that you I saw at Alta last Friday?

From Josh E on Mon, Nov 23, 2015 at 16:09:30 from 205.235.104.4

Yup. Great day.

From Amiee on Mon, Nov 23, 2015 at 16:34:27 from 24.11.72.2

I didn't even know you skied! I have an Alta pass of sorts this year so let me know if you ever need a partner! Does Marianne ski too?

From Josh E on Tue, Nov 24, 2015 at 12:58:32 from 166.170.14.60

I started learning last year. I am working on connecting turns on steeper terrain and surviving off of groomers. Marianne has skied since her youth but she is a gentle soul and doesn't do more than blue runs. We are always up for company!

Treadmill speed + form practice. I warmed up 3 going from 8.1mph-9.1mph then did a tempo of 10.1, 10.3, 10.1 with four bursts in the last mile going up to 12mph for 10 seconds every .25 miles. Then cooled down 1.5. Felt good and my hip is feeling strong. 50 minutes total.

At about 11, I ran with my wife from Research Park home and then back by myself. 63 minutes with Marianne downhill and 52 minutes back up. Longest run in a while and I held up well.

I decided to run with Fritz and Kotter up emigration from the Zoo. I held up pretty well on the uphill, letting them go in the last 2. Caught up after the Klassik Kotter break and ran back down the canyon. Six miles down the canyon was enough for my hip so I stopped at Ruth's and Fritz returned for me. 7:06 pace for the run. Lovely cold morning and I've missed Jon.
