AM

8 with James on the avenues loop.

Lunch

10 minute stairmaster warm and cool followed by an extensive PT strengthening routine.

I have not had a good long run in over two months and I believe there is a physicial limitation holding me back. My only guess is a chronic hip/glute strength imbalance causing undue wear and tear and stress. Plan for now is to run entirely by feel until I am feeling good again while taking PT seriously and perhaps getting some further advice.

By no "good" long runs - I assume you mean that you feel broken/injured(ish) on the longer efforts? I'd say that was a very good long run over the weekend in terms of the length/pace, but I guess not so much if it physically broke you down.

I haven't felt strong in any of them and I never feel good after mile 16.

On Saturday, I was working too hard earlier on (maybe elevation was a factor) and my last three downhill were in the 7s. My left hip/glute were pretty sore and it was difficult to lift in sitting position for a few hours afterward.

I think passing the 15 mile mark can be dangerous if you have lingering tweaks or imbalances. Two years ago I did a 20 miler at Jeremy Ranch the Saturday after DesNews and my hamstring was tweaked for the next two months. The year before that (2011) I ran 120 miles two weeks after DesNews and my hip was injured until the end of October.

Anyway, it's good to see you back running a bit.

To both of you, JP and I will be meeting at Feldmans Deli at 6:30am for a ~10. If interested we could head south for 5 and then head back.

Have you tried sports massage, acupuncture, or aromatherapy?

From Josh E on Wed, Aug 13, 2014 at 17:57:37 from 75.169.23.54

Sports massage after the marathon and a month prior. No to the latter two but if you're selling essential oils, I want to know more.

I made up the last one.

I can point you in the direction of some fantastic lavender fields for aromatherapy, and subsequent vomiting.

I've never heard of Feldman's Deli. Sounds like a Seinfeld ripoff.

From Rob Murphy on Wed, Aug 13, 2014 at 19:20:08 from 24.10.247.181

Feldman's (best sandwiches in Salt Lake no contest, but expensive). On 20th East, 2700 South right across from Maverick and Frost's Books.

Sorry about the hip/glute stuff. In my experience, that can be rough and hard to get over. Strengthen everything around there, but honestly, if your thing is anything like mine, skiing is the best possible PT, as it forces symmetry and balance while strengthening hips/glute in a way that doesn't flare it up. For me, this is the healthiest I've felt in 2 years now, and I think skiing as much as I did this past winter was the key.

I wish there was a Seinfeld episode about essential oils. That would have been an instant classic.

Apropos to your comment to me ... maybe some yoga. Almost every class does a warrior sequence that really opens up the hips. You'll also know right away what is weaker/imbalanced in all sorts of ways. If you don't want to go to a class - Yoga for Athletes by Kimberly Fowler is the best yoga DVD. It's 50 minutes. The first 25 is a flow working on legs. Last 25 minutes is upper body, balance, strength.

Thanks Collin and Kristen. I do need to find something else that tends toward more balanced fitness.

Second on Feldman's. A true gem of a Jewish deli but not an actual deli - you sit down and have a server.
