AM

7.25 miles - Woke up at 5:15 and went to the west high track. Warmed up 2 total then did 4 striders on the straightaways. My brother in law met me there but he doesn't really run so he was just trying to move a bit. He probably broke my rhythym a bit but he got me out there.

I did 3x800 trying to aim for sub 2:30 with 3 minutes rest between. These were 2:33, 2:38, 2:40.

Then 10 minutes easy jogging with my brother in law which ended up being at about 11 minute pace.

Then 6x200 aiming for the same speed (37.5). Splits were 36.8, 37.5, 37.3, 37.5, 39.5, 41.4. Rests were 30, 25, 20, 15 and 10 seconds. I had to dodge a guy on the inside track on 1, 3 and 5.

Then cooled down a bit over a mile. I would like to get more comfortable running 5 pace and hopefully this is a building block. The trouble is my ischial tendonitis in my left glute flares up when running this speed. I would like to figure out what to do with it but I don't really know where to start.

Lunch

4.65 miles - I went down to the U track, ran a 1600 in 5:38 and came back. I am also trying to get comfortable at 5:40-5:45 pace on flat routes and I wanted to get a feel for where I am with this pace. Unfortunately, my left glute bothered me a bit. Now I am worried that it will get in the way of my speed goals. I came back and did some PT, strenght and stretching.

Solid workout for sure. Those times are really impressive, especially for 5am. I don't know about the glute, have you tried massage?

Be careful with that ischial tendonitis problem. Better to take a couple weeks super easy then be able to train 100% than to let it become chronic and be at 80% for months and months.

James - things like PT and massage help temporarily but don't get rid of it.

Andrea - I don't know what it is - bursitis, tendonitis, a hamstring pull or what but it happened 5 months ago in the last miles of the Ogden Marathon. It's usually a dull pain but it really flares up sometimes and especially with speed and since I have a need for speed my injury and my need are at odds. I might have to lay off the speed but that won't solve it, it just won't aggravate it...I suppose I could take some time off in the offseason but the weather is so peachy :)

This is obviously an extreme case, yet worth sharing. I have a friend that ran Top of Utah a couple years ago and shortly after she had pain in her glute. The pain was pretty consistent and worse when running. She then developed tingling and numbness in her left leg. After all kinds of doctors and tests (many of which thought she might have the beginning stages of MS), one physical therapist suggested that there was possibly a small muscle down deep that was so tight it was causing a nerve issue. Sure enough it was that. After a few months of physical therapy with this guy stretching and massaging her the pain was gone.

Obviously, I am not suggesting that your issue is the same, but it could be some deep tissue issue (say that ten times fast) that is hard to pin point.

Oh, that's right - I was thinking that this was a recent injury but you've had problems in the past.

I'm not sure what the best plan is. I know that if it keeps getting irritated, the problem will never get better. But what to do in order to fix it? I don't know...Jake has had some luck doing quad stretching, massage, heating before exercise, and the compression.

Thanks guys. It may be time to seek help since it is interfering with what I want to do.

Well if you don't already have someone in mind (I've found it is very hard to find someone that has any idea what they are talking about), PT Todd Schwartz at Hand and Ortho has helped me a lot. Also, massage therapist Tim Pagoaga (801-808-7051) is the therapist for the U athletics and is really good.
