3-2-1 sharpening workout for Canyonlands on Saturday. Warmed up about 2.5 to Wasatch and did it on the Wasatch rollers. Started out a bit slow with a 6:04 (40 up 50 down) running with Adam then took off and went maybe a bit fast for the next two at 5:35 (40 up 25 down) and 5:38 (40 up 60 down). Then a .5 mile rest and Adam left. Then 2 at 5:42 (65 up 50 down) and 5:46 (5 up 30 down) which felt like the right effort. Then .25 mile rest and 1 in 5:33 (35 up 50 down).

Felt good the whole time. It was a strong effort but I never felt like I was really working to hold pace.

Overall, I will be upset if I don't hit 5:45 pace on Saturday and the goal is 5:39 pace.

Nice workout!

Is the whole family going down to Moab this weekend?

From Josh E on Wed, Mar 12, 2014 at 14:31:13 from 205.235.104.4

Yup - even my mom. I honestly have no idea who is running other than James. I'm not sure who the fast guys are.

From Andrea on Wed, Mar 12, 2014 at 14:40:42 from 72.37.171.52

Looks like Patrick Smyth, Josh Steffen (1:13:48 2013), James Moore, Walter Brown, Justin Park are on the list, just from checking registration status in the top 10 from last year...

Very good tune up. Man bro. With Saturday and abd today you should feel a lot of confidence going into this half. You're looking good for sub 2:35 at Boston. Take care of that hip and MIH...

From Jake K on Wed, Mar 12, 2014 at 14:48:04 from 159.212.71.17

Nice job. You found the pace range for the middle miles. Try not to start off too fast on Saturday. If you are ahead of Smyth, that is too fast :-)

From Josh E on Wed, Mar 12, 2014 at 15:04:47 from 205.235.104.4

I will stay behind Smyth. But I do expect that first mile to be the fastest. I don't think I will blow up in a half marathon running fast down a steep hill at the start.

And for James's' sake, I should have said who the OTHER fast guys are.

From Jake K on Wed, Mar 12, 2014 at 15:07:05 from 159.212.71.17

Yeah that first mile looks really quick. This is definitely a case where you bank a little time. Keep the breathing relaxed and you'll be fine.

The wind always makes that race interesting :). You're set for a good one!

From Josh E on Wed, Mar 12, 2014 at 15:21:21 from 205.235.104.4

You mean the prediction of NNW winds of 20-30 mph? That's a tail wind going into town, right :) If that's the prediction now, I am predicting perfect weather.

From fiddy on Wed, Mar 12, 2014 at 15:24:23 from 155.101.96.139

Naturally, I checked the registration status of just about everyone I could think of.

In addition to Andrea's list, there is Brian Summers (who has run 2:40/1:13 I think) and a Brandon Christensen from Salt Lake (I think that's BJ). My goal is 1:20. I can't decide if that's way too hard or way too easy.

From Jake K on Wed, Mar 12, 2014 at 15:26:49 from 159.212.71.17

That's a ridiculous forecast at the moment. Calm Friday, calm Sunday... ferocious on Saturday. Of course.

From Josh E on Wed, Mar 12, 2014 at 20:21:15 from 65.130.223.132

James - I think 1:20 is no problem for you even if you're not feeling that great. Your mileage is much higher lately than it has been and you don't tire in the later miles. I think 6:00 pace is auto pilot for you which puts you in the 1:18s unless it's an awful day.
