Lunch

Wasatch out and back from work. No watch. Took it easy and decided not to go six like I had planned just to be safe. I felt ok and the hip felt looser as the run went on. I had a few sideaches which are unusual for me - I need to get my body back into the routine.

I had an MRI last Friday and discussed it with Dr. Poulsen over the weekend (he loves working weekends I guess). I may have a small labral tear but those aren't uncommon. Mostly just irritation around the spots that have bothered me. He told me there were no obvious big issues so I feel like it is ok to run as long as there is no tightness or worsening of the pain. Another doctor to see.

I am going to keep trying to figure this out to get the pain to go away but I am guessing it is more physical therapy and strengthening than anything. I don't plan to run fast until I have a better idea of the path forward.

Lunch

Dry creek out and back from work slow. No watch. Felt good. None of the nagging issues are worse or better after the extended down time. Same tightness and such.

I have decided not to run afterall after discussing with a physicial therapist. I can't reset the hips if I continue to run in the same ruinous pattern.

I did stairmaster today focusing on staying in a the lunge range of motion to keep my glutes contracted as much as possible. 30 minutes of that for 161 floors/1.15 vertical miles and then some PT glute strengthening.

30 minutes stairmaster and PT. Did 176 floors or 1.26 vertical miles apparently. 10% more than yesterday.

Pretty much the same as Wednesday. Floors up to 187 and 1.34 vertical miles. Trying some minor stuff with the upper body so I can go shirtless next summer.

AM

Went back to TOSH to discuss the issues with Joel after realizing Canyon Sports isn't on my insurance. He thinks I can address the nagging issues and recover that way. He didn't say but I think he suspects some of the fundamental issues are not correctable. I will have a doctor opine on that.

He measured my legs and my left leg, despite being more bowed, is longer than my right by 1.5 centimeters (93 to 91.5). Less than 1 cm is best and he suggested a simple insert on the left side may alleviate my SI pain (together with physical therapy and sustained post-PT attention).

His PT approach would target strengthening the areas of concern. He also refuted much of what I was told to do last week. Why hold a clamshell when that has nothing to do with your running motion? Don't stretch an injured hamstring! Hamstring slides, planks with clipboard, hamstring curls with swiss ball and bohemian lunges. I feel better about this approach than holding clamshells for 4x4 minutes with a band and some other stuff I could barely do

He has read studies that easy running can aid recovery so he encourages me to get back out there. I will do easy runs four days and PT three days. He told me not to let the sports med doc give me a shot in the affected region - that's the second warning I've had on this. But it's possible he has relied on shots less of late.

Lunch

PT followed by stairmaster. I jumped on the treadmill but my hip was tired with all the attention today so I moved to the stairmaster. I feel none of the issues on the stairmaster and it works me good. 214 floors and 1.53 vertical miles in 35 minutes. I went slightly less hard than Friday but very hard.

Lunch

7 mile emigration out and back. Warmish in the upper 70s. Felt fine. PT caused the targeted areas to be sore but the good pain not the injury pain. No watch.

Personal interest piece. You tend to drink more alcohol on days you exercise. And if that's every day...The linked study is also interesting suggesting alcoholic consumption may impair muscle recovery.

Lunch

Another emigration out and back. I finally brought my watch but refused to monitor pace. I turned around after the third mile beep and back to the office. Still running easy which turned out to be 7:44 pace for the run. Mid 80s :-( record temps likely today and tomorrow in Salt Lake. I sure missed a lot of lovely running weather.

I wore an insert in my right shoe and I may have noticed a slight decrease in impact on the left hip. Hopefully it doesn't juggle something loose on the right side.

PT thereafter. Our custodian was told not to clean the changing rooms during the lunch hour. Now that I haven't been running every day, she has started interfering again. I know of no other attorney who likes confrontation less than I do.

I got a bug in my eye while running and my wife is nowhere to be found to clear it out. She is leaving for two days this weekend and I wonder if I will get around to wearing pants. My house will be sort of like the Simpson's when Marge leaves and Bart stars working at a burlesque house. I heard that my grandpa would only eat saltines any time my grandma left town.

Lunch

40 minutes on the stairmaster (244 floors, 1.75 vertical miles) followed by some strength training and PT. Four out of five days working out and I feel much better. I really have missed it. My hip wasn't sore after my run yesterday like on Tuesday so that was also very encouraging.

PM

80 minute yoga routine.

9 am run. I wanted about 12. I waited a bit for the rain and eventually just left. I went up to the Capitol around memory grove up to 11th ave through fed heights, the U, research park, around my office, down through Harvard Yale. The rain stopped two miles in and I was having a nice time. Some time just after summiting my office, my phone started bugging. My music would get turned off (this is the first time in probably a year I ran with music and it's only because I couldn't find my Garmin) and Siri would be engaged repeatedly. Also a number of camera shots. So I'm probably being hacked. After shutting off my phone it continued so I stopped the music. Couldn't turn it off because I was tracking mileage.

Around 10.5 just before liberty park, my hip started tightening. I decided to stop at 12 but ran into the famous Rob Murphy and went a bit longer. So that's the long of it. Just waiting for my boss to pick me up and take me home since wifey is out of town. Good morning gone bad.
