I've never run this race but this year was a modified course so no one has technically run this. I warmed up running the course with Fritz which was helpful in knowing what was coming up. We finished the warm up just five minutes before the start. Lots of folks there as can be expected.

First mile was 5:16 and I wasn't feeling very spry. Second mile I tried to accelerate but lost pace after turning north on Font St. From about 1.75 on, I fell back to marathon pace. Mile 2 was 5:20. After turning onto the trail, I saw 6:05 on my watch and felt pretty pathetic. I tried to speed up to stay with an Alta runner but I had no kick. Mile 3 was 5:55 and 5:21 pace to finish.  Not sure about place but I think I was 2nd in my age group behind Nate Hornock. Cooled down with a big group.

This is about 30 seconds slower than my January PR and only 10 seconds faster than the Law Day 5k and Running for Relief that have much more ascent. So, I'm not in a great place running. Just sort of flat and going through the motions. Hopefully a few days off and some pampering and I can still run a 2:40 marathon on Thursday.

Honestly, as an observer today, something seemed a little "off". Seemed like lots of people were struggling.

Dog days of summer I suppose. Just rest up and relax for Des News.

You will be good to go for DesNews.

It does seem like the times should have been faster on that course. Not sure why.

Josh, Fritz - the course was slower than last year likely due to the extra uphill climb early in the race, the rhythm breaking dirt trail right when you have gathered some speed to make up for the uphill, a sharp turn at the end, and perhaps due to the difficulty of running tangents the way the certifier did them. In any case, the way it was done made it about equivalent to the certified version (not the one run this year) of Murray Fun Days. I am going to guess it is about 20 seconds slower than the Winter SLC Track Club 5 K.

Glad to hear your analysis Sasha. It does seem the times were pretty equivalent to Murray (correctly measured.) That makes me feel a bit better about my race. I'm used to Draper being 20-30 seconds faster than Murray. So I actually did make some improvement, and probably would have run faster had I not been trying so hard to hit that sub 18 pace.

I'm pretty excited to read about your upcoming "pampering". I just searched that word on google images and the results, when I mentally insert your face into them, were fantastic.

Good luck next week and save a little for Foothill Blvd!

Sounds like a tough race and course. I've never raced well in summer 5Ks. Hot and always in the middle of training for a longer fall goal race. Hard to keep up the speed!
