Law Day 5k. First goal was to be the fastest lawyer. I did that by six seconds and won a gavel. Second goal was to go 5:40 up and 4:50 down. Epic fail. First mile 5:43 (112 ft up), second mile 5:55 (net 80 up), third mile 5:28 (177 down) and 5:02 pace to the finish. My legs never felt great. Not an easy course with a 230 ft ascent before descending but more than anything I just never felt strong. I led the race until about mile 2 and then a guy passed me and beat me by 15 seconds. Perhaps I left my fast mile at memory grove on Wednesday. The start was botched with the guy gaveling before we got to the start line and I basically got a running start. Didn't cool down but I will probably get out for another run today.

You might have left your fast mile in that little run you did in Boston a few weeks ago :-)

I would say don't worry about this - the goal paces were pretty ambitious and you weren't really trained for this... yet.

Course PR, right?!

From Fritz on Sat, May 17, 2014 at 16:02:34 from 98.202.9.237

That's still a good time on that course and more importantly, you were the fastest lawyer.

I recall thinking this was Jeff's best performance ever (14:55) back when the two law firms had their competition

They changed the route starting last year so that instead of going right on central campus drive you keep going up to wasatch drive around the track. A bit harder. Check out my strava.

Oh yeah, that's a completely different course. The old one had a bunch of little turns but the new one does look slower. Directors shouldn't be allowed to change courses, despite construction.

Great time on that course Josh. Good racing!

Nice work Josh. I don't know the course, but it sounds tough with that climb.

Nice race, Josh! Fastest lawyer -- pretty fun!

From Josh E on Sun, May 18, 2014 at 14:44:09 from 65.130.119.46

Matt - it was good for Kotter to be in AZ over the weekend. Otherwise I would have been toast.

All races should have a fastest lawyer division. ;)

From Josh E on Tue, May 20, 2014 at 07:11:42 from 65.130.119.46

Kristen - I totally agree. They should always get the grand prize too.

From steve ash on Wed, May 21, 2014 at 09:23:49 from 67.161.243.240

A pretty good race nonetheless Josh. Sometimes as you know the recovery phase takes a while deep down to fully bounce back. Regaining that snap in the legs again might take some time?

From Josh E on Wed, May 21, 2014 at 10:25:59 from 205.235.104.4

Thanks Steve. Jake said the same thing Sunday and I think that played some role. Particularly in the slow third mile. But that's probably as good of a performance as I deserve right now. Sometimes you want to will yourself to go faster but you can't get there on will alone.

From Josh E on Thu, May 22, 2014 at 08:44:43 from 205.235.104.4

Ok - so the guy who beat me is Ryan Merriman. A BYU law student and former track and cross country runner there. 14:24 for 5k. He was just out for a jog. Once he graduates, I will be at best the third fastest lawyer.

From Jake K on Thu, May 22, 2014 at 08:59:21 from 199.190.170.30

You'd crush him at the Law Day Marathon.

From KristenRuns on Thu, May 22, 2014 at 11:10:21 from 68.15.2.98

Well, he's not a lawyer YET. What's the bar passage rate in Utah? ;)

From Josh E on Thu, May 22, 2014 at 11:20:59 from 205.235.104.4

Mid 90s for BYU students (90% overall) so its a forgone conclusion for the earnest runner type. I am also licensed in Califonia so I can attest to its relative simplicity. I made it a point not to learn or apply any Utah law...
